With record extension on deck, Giancarlo Stanton cheers on 'The U'

About that record 13-year, $325 million contract the Miami Marlins are offering Giancarlo Stanton? Chances are he's going to sign it really, really soon, but not before he takes in a little college football action at Sun Life Stadium.

The runner-up in the 2014 NL MVP balloting was spotted on the Miami Hurricanes sideline throwing up 'The U' sign before their in-state rivalry game against the No. 3 ranked Florida State Seminoles on Saturday night.

What can Stanton buy with all of his new money? Not college football tickets, because obviously he doesn't have to. The red carpet has been rolled out and he has a front row view of a critical game in terms of the college football rankings.

Stanton wasn't the lone Marlins representative on hand. Teammates A.J. Ramos and Jarrod Saltalamacchia were there as well. That would be Saltalamacchia in the Florida State jersey, which might explain why he's in the stands and behind a barrier.

During last year's game, Alex Rodriguez, a former Hurricane, was spotted on the Miami sideline. Of course, Rodriguez was the held the record for largest contract when he signed for $275 million with the New York Yankees in 2007. Now he's been replaced in more ways than one, as the one-time USC Trojans baseball commit with the newest, biggest contract holds court on Miami's sideline.

In all honestly, there's not a great deal of significance to Stanton's surprise appearance. Well, aside from one little thing: It proves he's in Miami. At this point, it may be only a matter of hours before Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria officially bids farewell to a fortune.
