Darrelle Revis is heading back to New York.
After winning a Super Bowl in his lone season with the Patriots, Revis, the four-time All Pro cornerback, is returning to the Jets on a deal that has more than $40 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
New England decided not to pick up Revis’ $20 million option, making him a free agent. A little less than five hours into free agency Revis came to an agreement with the Jets, where he spent his first six seasons in the league.
Revis, who had 47 tackles, 14 passes defended and two interceptions while starting all 16 games in 2014, signed a two-year, $32 million deal with New England last March which included that $20 million option for 2015. New England decided against it and hoped to renegotiate with Revis on a long-term extension. That didn’t come to fruition, and now Revis Island is back with the division rival Jets.
This move has been predicted for a while, and it will add intrigue to the tampering case brought against the Jets, presumably by the Patriots. Jets owner Woody Johnson said on Dec. 29, "I'd love Darrelle to come back," a clear rule violation because Revis was under contract with the Patriots at the time.
Though he turns 30 in July, Revis is still one of the top corners in the game. After being picked by the Jets in the first round in 2007, Revis quickly established himself as a dominant player. In addition to his four All-Pro selections, Revis also represented the AFC in the Pro Bowl six times and was the 2009 AFC defensive player of the year.
Revis wasn't the only Jets' addition in the secondary. Joining Revis on the Jets is 5-foot-9 corner Buster Skrine. Skrine, a former fifth-round pick, signed with the Jets after spending four seasons in Cleveland, where he registered 235 tackles and six interceptions in 37 career starts.
With one bold move, the Jets became one of the big winners in free agency.
