Since Jake Waters injured his shoulder in Kansas State’s win over Oklahoma on Oct. 18, the Wildcats’ running attack hasn’t been the same. Though Waters has not missed a game, he’s totaled a combined 38 yards over the past three games (compared to 64 yards per game in KSU's first five games), including just two yards in a loss to TCU over the weekend.
Designed quarterback runs have been on the decline. With Waters still a bit hampered by the shoulder, the Wildcats could look to backup quarterback Joe Hubener, who led a touchdown drive late Saturday’s loss, to give the rushing attack a jolt out of the wildcat formation moving forward.
“We are prepared to do that, to have Joe on the field,” head coach Bill Snyder said Tuesday per the Kansas City Star. “He showed again the other night, that he is making headway and he is truly capable. I think all of the coaches feel comfortable with him. That is not out of the question.”
Hubener, a sophomore and former walk-on who earned a scholarship, is projected to be Kansas State’s starter next season. In the meantime, Hubener wants to help the team in any way possible.
“The quarterback run game opens up opportunities. If you throw me in there, whether it be short yardage or a situation where you just need a couple yards. They feel confident in me,” Hubener said.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Hubener said he practices the wildcat quarterback in practice on a daily basis. He thinks his size, plus the bumps and bruises of the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Waters, gives him a chance to see some non-garbage time snaps in the team’s next game at West Virginia on Nov. 20.
“I think (coaches) are more willing to use the quarterback run game with me just because of my size,” Hubener said. “They are also not worried about me getting hurt or banged up in there like they are with Jake.
“To be able to just go in there during garbage time, when it doesn’t really matter, and show what I can do has definitely been beneficial to me. I feel that confidence more and more.”
