When Tennessee players jogged onto the floor Friday night in advance of their season opener against VCU, none of the Vols did so wearing their own name or number on their warmups.
They each instead wore long-sleeved shirts with the phrase "I WILL" on the front and "McKamey 41" on the back.
The shirts were a tribute to Knoxville native and Navy running back Will McCamey, who died on March 25 after collapsing earlier in the week during spring practice. Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall chose to wear the shirts Friday since the Vols are playing in Annapolis as part of a season-opening Veteran's Classic doubleheader that will also feature Navy and Michigan State.
Members of the McKamey's family attended Tennessee's practice on Tuesday and received "I WILL" shirts of their own from Tyndall, WBIR in Knoxville reported. McKamey's father, Randy McKamey, addressed the team, leaving many of the Vols teary-eyed.
The classy gesture from Tennessee should help the Vols get some fan support away from home Friday night.
McKamey's mother, Kara McKamey, thanked Tyndall for his gesture on Instagram and added, "I ask my Navy friends to cheer on the UT Vols next Friday night! Navy and UT... first class programs!! We our proud to call you both our own! #govols."
