Cristiano Ronaldo rose up to head in the only goal of Portugal's Euro qualifier against Denmark in the fifth minute of injury time to give his side a dramatic late win. This capped off a day in which the also reached an absurd new height of internet popularity by surpassing 100 million fans on Facebook.
Though Ronaldo was obviously pleased with the goal, Ronaldo posted a video in which he claimed that he has "always dreamed" of "beautiful moments" like the Facebook mark since he was a little boy. Even though Facebook didn't exist when he was a little boy.
No other athlete is anywhere near Ronaldo's 100 million Facebook supporters. In fact, the nearest sporting competition is an entire club, Barcelona, with 76 million likes. Lionel Messi has 74 million. According to CNN, Ronaldo is adding Facebook fans at an average rate of 54 per minute.
After struggling at the World Cup, Ronaldo is currently on pace for a La Liga goal record with 13 in his first six matches. Barcelona's Neymar is currently second with seven goals and Lionel Messi is third with six.
Though he doesn't have 100 million Facebook fans or any goal records, Portugla's Ricardo Quaresma is enjoying a bit of a rebirth. Once compared to Ronaldo, Quaresma bounced around Europe, playing for big clubs like Barcelona, Porto, Inter and Chelsea before washing out and ending up with Al Ahli in Dubai last year. Now back with Porto, Quaresma has returned to the national team. He scored from the penalty spot in a friendly against France at the weekend and came off the bench in the 84th minute of the Denmark match to set up Ronaldo's goal with a dazzling cross.
So not only are things going well for Ronaldo, but his friends as well — which is the mark of true success. Aside from internet likes, of course.
