BYU had an awful first half against Utah State Friday night. Not only did the undefeated Cougars fall behind 28-14 at home to the 2-2 Aggies, starting quarterback Taysom Hill – a Heisman Trophy contender – went down with what appears to be a serious leg injury.
The injury occurred when the 6-foot-2, 232-pound Hill sprinted to the right on a second down play and was taken down awkwardly from behind. When going down to the ground, Hill’s left leg was caught underneath Utah State safety Brian Suite.
Hill was able to get up, but was unable to put much weight, if any, on his left leg. He was immediately tended to by trainers and carted off into the locker room soon after.
The injury, if it is as serious as it looks, is a huge blow for the No. 18 Cougars – a team looking to make its way into the first-ever College Football Playoff.
Hill’s backup, Christian Stewart, has thrown just two passes in his career.
Coming into Friday night’s game, Hill had thrown for 876 yards and six touchdowns while also running for 428 yards and seven touchdowns.
Already trailing by 14 points, it will be a tough task for the Cougars to keep their undefeated season alive without Hill in the second half.
