We here at BDL joined the many fans who applauded the Memphis Grizzlies' announcement last month that they'd be giving the fans who attend their April 2015 home game against the Washington Wizards special, limited edition "Z-Bow-Ties". As promotional items to fans go, bowties bearing the image and likeness of inimitable power forward Zach Randolph seemed about as great as giveaways get; even if the garment itself isn't exactly couture-quality, it's still the kind of thing that you'd suspect every Grizzlies fan would want, love and cherish.
"That'll be hard to top," I thought.
In a related story, the San Antonio Spurs — who, as it happens, have won the Grizzlies' division for the past four years, swept Memphis out of the Western Conference finals back in 2013, and are the defending NBA champions — are going to give the fans who attend their home opener against the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 28 championship rings. ("Showoffs," someone in Memphis grumbled.)

Feast your eyes on the free jewelry, y'all:
Now, the AT&T Center faithful won't be getting the same kind of precious diamond-encrusted bauble as the Spurs' players and coaches; I mean, the folks at H-E-B and BBVA Compass are nice, but not that nice. But the replicas that Spurs supporters who show up early for the pre-game festivities — the unveiling of San Antonio's fifth championship banner, plus the on-court distribution of rings to the team, will kick off at about 6:30 p.m. Texas time, ahead of the 7 p.m. tipoff — will receive still sound pretty sweet:
The commemorative NBA Championship rings feature the iconic Spur logo on the front and the team’s 2013-14 regular and post-season records above the NBA logo on the left panel. The opposite panel is etched with a replica of the Larry O’Brien trophy with five studs, representing each of the Spurs’ five championships. The giveaway is limited to one commemorative ring per ticketed guest and is one-size-fits-all.
The giveaway follows in the footsteps of a similar promotion held last year by the Washington Wizards, who gave away replicas of the Washington Bullets' 1978 NBA championship rings to honor the 35th anniversary of that title team back in April 2013. While Bullets backers certainly appreciated the long-overdue opportunity to celebrate the lone championship in franchise history, I'm betting the Spurs fans in attendance on the 28th will be pretty psyched that they didn't have to wait 35 years for a killer promotion praising the crew that won No. 5 this past spring. (Now if we could just add some Manu Ginobolo ties to the promo calendar, we'd really be in business.)
