McIlroy and Garcia outlast Furyk and Mahan in a match with few won holes

Jim Furyk is a grinder, and his Saturday foursomes match with Hunter Mahan against Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia took on his personality.

The Europeans got out to a hot start, winning the first two holes with a par and a birdie. Furyk and Mahan struck back with a winning par on the third when Mahan's par putt went all the way around the cup before dropping, and then the match went into lockdown. The next 10 holes of the match were halved, with both teams playing in 1 under par during the stretch.

It was a birdie at the par-4 14th hole that broke the stalemate, putting the Americans two down with four to play.

The U.S. was out of position on the par-5 16th with Mahan's tee shot. After recovering, the Americans had a par putt up onto the tier where the hole location was. When Mahan came up short, he conferred with Furyk and they decided to hand the winning birdie putt to Garcia and McIlroy, who end their week together with a 1-1-1 record.
